En Afrique comme en Europe, le passé colonial semble ressurgir dans l’actualité. Esclavage, conquête coloniale, administration coloniale sont remis à l’ordre du jour de manière à instruire a posteriori un procès de la colonisation, dans une logique qui appelle parfois une forme de réparation. Ce débat est-il encore d’actualité ? L’histoire de la conquête coloniale nous renseigne-t-elle encore sur l’état du monde d’aujourd’hui ? Et que faut-il alors faire des traces matérielles et des témoignages de ce chapitre de l’histoire de l’humanité ? Restituer ? Restaurer ? Laisser à l’abandon ?
In Africa as well as in Europe, the colonial past seems currently – and quite paradoxically – to be re-emerging in the relations between former colonies and the countries which colonised them. Slavery, the conquest of colonies, colonial administration, etc., are again at the forefront of a debate which aims at putting the colonial past « on trial », and eventually at making some kinds of amends. Is this debate still up to date? Does the history of colonial conquest still tell us something of the present world? And what should be done with the material leftovers and the imaginary impacts of this page of the history of humanity : Restitution, Restoration or Abandon?
